I would say the dps increase from the Karil'ls compensates for the loss of prayer from the book (the longer you have to kill magers + have mage pray on the more ppots you use per wave). IMO if you dont have the money for a blowpipe - leave the fire cape for ... Even with amethyst arrows, pretty sure Karil's is better than MSB (I), only by about 5%, but still better. It's right in the middle of the two for attack speed.
Arma on Vorkath has a DPS of 9.72 with max gear and addy darts. Switching to Void with the same stats has a DPS of 10.0. So you are going to be hitting very slightly higher with void, but you're going to be eating more and get much shorter trips with void. Just eating more alone is going to hit hard on your dps.. Black d hide is even more op for its price, but karils isn't exactly expensive. Karils skirt is like 2m and black dhide is 8k. Black dhide has better melee defense where as Karils has slightly better range and mage defense by around 15% in terms of numbers. The main use for Karils is Magic Defence and I believe it is the strongest Magic Defence armor without a Melee Attack negative, which is why you might see it used more for Melee than for Ranged.
